Barn at Touch Stone Manor, Osgoode, Ontario

At Touch Stone Manor we have approximately  60 llamas and alpacas.  Our animals are used for fibre so we spend a great deal of time keeping our barns and pastures clean and tidy to ensure healthy animals and fine quality fibre. We grow all our own fibre on the farm for the products that we sell in our shop.Llama at Touch Stone Manor, Osgoode, Ontario

Llamas and alpacas are domesticated members of the camelid family.  This family of animals originated on the plains of North America about ten million years ago.

Around the world, alpacas are in strong demand and people pay high prices for them.   They are scarce, unique and the textiles produced from their fibre are known in the fashion centres of Paris, Milan, and Tokyo. In the past, the value of alpacas sustained the cultures of the ancient Incas of Peru and today the are a strong economic force in South America.

The llama has long been revered by the Andean Indians who make use of everything from its hair to its droppings.  The llama is a two-coated animal that has a fine downy undercoat which protects it from cold and heat, as well as a crimpless guard hair that allows moisture and debris to be shed.  Today the llama has been selectively bred to have a finer fibre similar to that of the alpaca.

Angora Goat at Touch Stone Manor, Osgoode, OntarioAngora goats are believed to have originated in the Himalaya Mountains of Asia.  They were highly regarded and were protected from exportation until 1849, when the first angoras were brought to the United States. In 1975 they were first used commercially in Canada.
Mohair, the soft fleece of angora goats, has long been a top choice for use in high-fashion sweaters, dresses and suits.  Mohair is warmer than wool, takes dye better and has a luster all its own. It also resists stains and wrinkles, holds a press well, causes little itching or scratching and is naturally flame resistant.

Our llamas and alpacas are shorn once a year and our goats are shorn twice per year to supply raw fibre, yarn and knitted and woven articles for sale.

We also sell high quality llamas, alpacas for many purposes such as fibre, guard animals, trekking and driving.  Please Contact us for more details on the animal that is best for you.
